It's such a fun shot! It sounds like that you focused the lens and then moved the camera - which would also move the focal point in the same direction. I find it's always best to frame the shot, focus on the face (an eye even better!) and then adjust your f/stop to allow more or less of the subject to be in focus. The depth of field with f/1.8 is shallower than if you bumped up the f/stop to a larger number. f/4 would have allowed for the entire subject/bike to be in focus and since you had plenty of light you could have lowered your shutter speed to adjust for proper exposure.
